CCMA Exam Day: What to Expect at a PSI Testing Center

What to expect on CCMA exam day at a PSI testing center: check-in, ID requirements, palm scan, breaks, and when you get your results.

What to Expect at a PSI Testing Center

Your CCMA exam is administered at a PSI testing center, not Pearson VUE. This trips up a lot of candidates because the AAMA's CMA exam uses Pearson VUE, but NHA's CCMA uses PSI. Double-check your appointment confirmation email so you drive to the right building. Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. When you walk in, you'll check in at the front desk and hand over two forms of ID. The proctor will confirm your name matches your NHA account exactly, then take a palm vein scan or fingerprint for identity verification. You'll also have your photo taken. Next, you'll empty your pockets and store everything in a small locker the center provides. Phones must be powered off, not just silenced. The proctor will walk you through the testing room rules, hand you scratch paper or a small whiteboard and a pencil or marker, and escort you to your assigned workstation. The exam runs on a standard desktop computer with a mouse and keyboard. There is no touchscreen. A timer stays visible on the screen, and you can flag questions to revisit before you submit. When you finish, you'll click through a short survey and see your unofficial pass or fail result on the screen before you leave the room. The proctor will collect your scratch paper, sign you out, and return your belongings from the locker.

What to Bring (and What to Leave Home)

PSI provides almost everything you need inside the testing room, so your job is to show up with the right IDs and nothing that will get flagged at check-in. Bring: • Two valid IDs. Your primary ID must be government-issued with a photo and signature, like a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Your secondary ID just needs your name on it, such as a credit card, debit card, or insurance card. • IDs with names that match your NHA account exactly. If you recently changed your name, update your NHA profile before test day or bring documentation of the change. • Printed or written directions to the test center. You will not be able to check your phone once you're inside. • Comfortable layered clothing. Testing rooms are often kept cool, and you'll be sitting for up to three hours. Leave at home (or in your car): • Phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, and earbuds • Notes, study guides, flashcards, and scratch paper of your own • Food, drinks, gum, and candy • Bulky jewelry, hats, and hooded sweatshirts (simple rings and small earrings are usually fine) • Bags, purses, and backpacks (small lockers are available but limited) PSI supplies your scratch paper or whiteboard, a writing utensil, and noise-reducing headphones or earplugs if you want them. You do not need to bring anything for the exam itself.

What happens if I'm late to my PSI appointment?

PSI enforces a strict late policy. Most centers will not admit candidates who arrive more than 15 minutes after their scheduled start time, and your exam fee is forfeited. NHA and PSI treat late arrivals as a no-show, which means you'll need to register and pay again to retake the exam, plus any rescheduling fees. The safest plan is to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment. Give yourself extra buffer for traffic, parking, and finding the right suite inside the building. Many PSI centers share office space with other businesses, so the front door isn't always obvious. If a genuine emergency comes up, contact PSI and NHA as soon as possible before your appointment time. Rescheduling in advance is much cheaper and easier than being marked as a no-show.

Can I take the CCMA exam from home?

Yes. NHA offers remote online proctoring through PSI BridgeOnline. You take the exam on your own computer while a live proctor watches through your webcam and microphone. To test from home, you'll need a quiet, private room with the door closed, a reliable internet connection, a working webcam, and a microphone. You'll be asked to do a room scan with your camera before the exam starts, and no other people can be in the room at any point. The same rules about notes, phones, and secondary devices apply — the proctor can end your session and forfeit your attempt if you break them. Some candidates prefer in-center testing because there are fewer technical variables to worry about. Others prefer the convenience of testing at home without the drive. Both options use the exact same exam and the exact same passing standard, so choose whichever setting will keep you calmest on test day.

When do I get my CCMA results?

You'll see an unofficial pass or fail result on the screen immediately after you submit your exam. That result is reliable — it very rarely changes — but it is not your official score. Your official score report is emailed to you by NHA within 1 to 2 business days. It includes your scaled score and a breakdown of how you performed in each content domain, which is useful for identifying weak areas if you need to retest. If you pass, NHA issues your CCMA credential within a few days. It will appear in your NHA account, where you can download your digital certificate, print your wallet card, and share verification with employers. Your physical certificate and wallet card are mailed separately and typically arrive within a few weeks.
