New York CNA Certification Overview
To become a Certified Nurse Aide in New York, you must complete a state-approved training program and pass the New York Nurse Aide Competency Examination administered by Prometric on behalf of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
New York requires a minimum of 100 hours of CNA training, with at least 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Many New York programs exceed this minimum.
The exam consists of two parts:
• A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours
• A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills
You must pass both parts to be listed on the New York State Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70%.
New York CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested
The New York written exam follows the NNAAP format used across most U.S. states. The 70 questions are drawn from six content areas:
• Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination
• Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response
• Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE order, standard and transmission-based precautions
• Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting
• Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support
• Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command
New York's nursing home population is among the largest in the country. Resident Rights questions are taken seriously — make sure you know what residents are legally entitled to and how to respond when rights are at risk.

New York CNA Skills Test — What to Expect
The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Prometric skills testing facility. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected skills. Each skill is scored against a required steps checklist by a trained evaluator.
Handwashing is evaluated within every skill — you must perform it correctly at the start and end of each skill. Incorrect hand hygiene is one of the top reasons candidates fail the New York skills test.
Commonly tested skills include:
• Handwashing
• Measuring and recording oral temperature
• Providing catheter care for a female resident
• Assisting with a bed-to-wheelchair transfer using a gait belt
• Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder
• Positioning a resident in Fowler's position
• Making an occupied bed
The complete skill list and required steps are published in the New York Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook available through Prometric.
How to Prepare for the New York CNA Exam
New York's first-attempt written exam pass rate is approximately 68–73%. Deliberate practice test use is the most reliable way to improve your score.
Recommended study plan:
1. Take a full diagnostic practice test before you begin studying. Review your results by topic to identify where to focus first.
2. Start with Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Prioritize correct bathing steps, gait belt technique, catheter care (always front to back for female residents), and standard positioning.
3. Study Infection Control carefully — New York facilities operate under strict infection prevention protocols and the exam reflects this. Know PPE donning order (gown, mask, eye protection, gloves) and doffing order (gloves, eye protection, gown, mask) without hesitation.
4. Practice under timed conditions — 2 hours for 70 questions. Take at least two full timed tests before exam day. Target 80% on practice tests.
5. For the skills test, rehearse each skill from handwashing to final handwashing. Time yourself — most skills should take 3–5 minutes when performed correctly.

After You Pass — New York Nurse Aide Registry
After passing both parts of the exam, your name is added to the New York State Nurse Aide Registry maintained by the NYSDOH. New York employers are required to check the registry before hiring.
Your New York CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain your registry listing, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period.
If you allow your certification to lapse, you must retake both the written and skills exams to be reinstated. Registry status can be verified through the NYSDOH Health Commerce System or by contacting the NYSDOH directly.
