Georgia CNA Certification Overview
To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Georgia, you must complete a state-approved training program and pass the Georgia Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Credentia on behalf of the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH).
Georgia requires a minimum of 85 hours of CNA training, including a minimum of 16 hours of supervised clinical practice in a long-term care facility.
The exam has two parts:
• A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours
• A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills
You must pass both parts to be listed on the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written exam is 70%.
Georgia CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested
The Georgia written exam follows the NNAAP format. All 70 questions come from six content areas:
• Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination
• Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, fire response (RACE), Heimlich maneuver, seizure care
• Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE order, isolation precautions, standard precautions
• Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA protections, right to refuse, privacy, dignity, abuse reporting
• Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support

Georgia CNA Skills Test — What to Expect
The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Credentia skills testing facility. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills. A trained evaluator scores each skill against a required steps checklist.
Handwashing is evaluated within every skill — perform it at the start and end of each demonstration. Georgia evaluators closely observe hand hygiene technique and proper gait belt placement during transfers.
Commonly tested Georgia skills include:
• Handwashing
• Measuring and recording blood pressure
• Providing catheter care for a female resident
• Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt
• Passive range of motion for the hip and knee
• Positioning a resident in Fowler's position
• Providing mouth care

How to Prepare for the Georgia CNA Exam
Georgia's first-attempt written exam pass rate is approximately 68–73%. Candidates who use structured practice tests consistently outperform those who rely on notes alone.
Recommended study plan:
1. Begin with a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying. Review your results by topic to find your weakest areas.
2. Prioritize Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Focus on transfer technique, bathing steps, catheter care direction (always front to back for female residents), and the standard positioning types.
3. Study Infection Control next — know PPE order (gown, mask, eye protection, gloves for donning; gloves, eye protection, gown, mask for doffing) and isolation precaution types.
4. Practice timed tests. Aim for 80% before scheduling your real exam to build in a margin above the 70% passing score.
5. For the skills test, run through each skill from handwashing to completion multiple times. Speed matters less than accuracy — complete every required step.

After You Pass — Georgia Nurse Aide Registry
After passing both parts of the Georgia exam, your name is added to the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry maintained by the DCH. Georgia employers must verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide.
Your Georgia CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period.
If your certification lapses, you must retake both the written and skills portions of the exam. Registry status can be verified through the Georgia DCH online portal.
