Free CNA Practice Test Utah 2026 — NNAAP Exam Prep Guide

Everything Utah CNA candidates need to know — UNAR exam format and testing locations, training requirements, and free NNAAP-style practice tests to help you pass on your first try.

Utah CNA Exam — Key Facts (2026)

Here is what every Utah CNA candidate needs to know before sitting for the exam — Utah is unusual in that there's no commercial testing vendor at all: • Training required: 100 hours (at least 24 of which must be supervised practical training in a nursing care facility) • Exam administrator: UNAR (Utah Nursing Assistant Registry) develops and runs both the written and skills exams directly, using its own "TMU" (Test Master Universe) software — not Prometric, Credentia, or HDmaster • Written exam: 75 questions, 2 hours, 75% passing score (57 of 75 correct) — built from UNAR's own 8-domain Utah test plan, not the standard NNAAP 6 • Skills exam: 5 skills, 45 minutes total, each requiring 80% with 100% of key steps correct — one skill is drawn at random from each of 5 categories (Vital Signs, Oral Care/Feeding, Ambulate/Positioning/Transfer, Toileting, and Miscellaneous Skills), out of a 20-skill pool • Retest deadline: you have only 1 year from training completion to pass both portions — tighter than the 2-year window most states allow — with up to 3 chances to pass each exam • Exam fee: $110 for the initial combined test ($55 written + $55 skills); retakes are $55 per exam • Renewal: every 2 years, verifying at least 200 paid hours of nursing-related work • Registry: Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR), at utahcnaregistry.com If you've studied using a generic "70 questions in 2 hours" practice test, recalibrate — Utah's real exam is 75 questions with a tighter 1-year retest deadline than almost any other state.

Utah CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Utah, you must complete a UNAR-approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) and pass the Utah Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation. Unlike most states, Utah doesn't contract with a commercial testing company — the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR) develops and administers both the written and skills exams itself, using its own TMU (Test Master Universe) software. Utah requires 100 hours of CNA training, with at least 24 hours of supervised practical training in a nursing care facility. The exam has two parts: • A written knowledge exam: 75 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours, requiring a 75% passing score (57 of 75 correct) • A manual skills demonstration exam: 5 randomly selected skills, 45 minutes total You have only 1 year from your training completion date to pass both portions — with up to 3 chances to pass each exam — to be listed on the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry.

Utah CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

UNAR writes its own exam questions — reviewed by the UNAR Test Advisory Committee for accuracy and evidence-based practice — rather than using the national NNAAP content outline. The 75 questions break down across 8 content domains: • Intro to Healthcare and Residents Rights (13 questions) — certification information, healthcare & resident's rights, communication • Basic Nursing Skills (13 questions) — positioning & ambulation, basic human needs, vital signs, nutrition, end-of-life care • Personal Care (13 questions) — resident environment, hygiene & grooming • Mental Health/Illness & Cognitive Impairment (9 questions) • Infection Prevention and Control (8 questions) • Safety (8 questions) • Body Systems (7 questions) • Rehabilitation & Restorative Care (4 questions) Three categories — Intro to Healthcare, Basic Nursing Skills, and Personal Care — tie for the largest share at 13 questions (about 17%) each, together making up just over half the exam.

Utah Testing Locations

Utah testing is run through UNAR's independent testing site partners across the state, including Blanding, Cedar City, Hurricane, Kaysville, Lehi, Logan, Moab, Ogden, Price, Richfield, Roosevelt, Salt Lake City, St. George, Tooele, and Vernal. Each test site runs independently and sets its own schedule. To view current testing sites, hours, and whether an appointment is required, check the Test Site Information document at utahcnaregistry.com or in your TMU account — appointments are always required for the skills exam, though some sites allow walk-ins for the written exam. To schedule, log into your TMU account and pay your testing fees online (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or debit cards accepted).

Utah CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

UNAR requires every training program graduate to learn and demonstrate more than 70 skills during training, documented on the UNAR Nursing Assistant Skill Proficiency Performance List (NAPP). Of those 70+, only 20 are eligible for the actual exam, grouped into 5 categories: • Vital Signs (2 skills) — blood pressure, pulse/respiration (both are "key step" skills) • Oral Care/Feeding Skills (4 skills) • Ambulate/Positioning/Transfer Skills (4 skills) • Toileting Skills (5 skills) • Miscellaneous Skills (5 skills) On exam day, one skill is randomly assigned from each of the 5 categories — 5 skills total, with a 45-minute time limit for all of them. To pass, you need a minimum 80% score on each skill, including 100% of that skill's key steps. Every step must actually be demonstrated — you cannot just describe what you'd do. The Utah Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook, available at utahcnaregistry.com, lists every one of the 20 exam-eligible skills with its full checklist.

How to Prepare for the Utah CNA Exam

Utah's 1-year retest deadline is tighter than most states — don't delay scheduling once you finish training. 1. Take a full 75-question diagnostic practice test before studying. Review your scores across Utah's 8 content domains — Intro to Healthcare, Basic Nursing Skills, and Personal Care together make up over half the exam. 2. Practice under timed conditions — 2 hours for 75 questions. 3. Drill all 20 exam-eligible skills across the 5 categories, not just your guesses at which 5 you'll draw — since one skill is randomly assigned from each category, you need to be ready for any of the 20. 4. Pay special attention to key steps on the two Vital Signs skills (blood pressure, pulse/respiration) — both are explicitly flagged as key-step skills in UNAR's own materials. 5. Target 85% or higher on practice tests — a real buffer above Utah's 75% passing bar. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free NNAAP-style practice test with 500+ questions — no account required.

After You Pass — Utah Nursing Assistant Registry

After passing both the written knowledge exam and the manual skills exam, your name is added to the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR), searchable publicly at utahcnaregistry.com. Utah certification must be renewed every 2 years. To renew, UNAR verifies that you've worked at least 200 paid hours of nursing or nursing-related services under the direction of a licensed nurse during that period. Registry status can be verified directly through the UNAR website or by contacting the UNAR office.
