Free CNA Practice Test Washington DC 2026 — NNAAP Exam Prep Guide

Everything Washington DC CNA candidates need to know — exam format, Credentia testing locations, training requirements, and free NNAAP practice tests to help you pass on your first try.

Washington DC CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Washington DC, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the DC Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Credentia on behalf of DC Health. DC requires a minimum of 120 hours of CNA training — well above the 75-hour federal minimum — split into 45 hours of classroom instruction, 30 hours of lab/skills practice, and 45 hours of supervised clinical practice in a licensed nursing home. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the DC Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70%.

Washington DC CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The DC written exam follows the NNAAP (Nurse Aide Assessment Program) format used across most Credentia states. All 70 questions are drawn from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, chain of command, documentation Physical Care Skills accounts for nearly half the exam. DC candidates who focus on bathing technique, gait belt transfers, and catheter care give themselves a significant advantage.

Washington DC Credentia Testing Locations

The DC CNA written exam is administered by Credentia at testing sites within the District and the surrounding metro area. To find the nearest testing center and available exam dates, visit credentia.com and search for Washington DC nurse aide. Your training program issues your authorization to test once you complete the required 120 hours. Because DC itself is compact, many candidates also have the option of testing at nearby Maryland or Virginia Credentia sites if that's more convenient — check your eligibility confirmation for the full list of accepted locations.

Washington DC CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Credentia skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills in front of a trained evaluator who scores each skill against a checklist of required steps. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill. You must perform proper handwashing at the beginning and end of each skill demonstration — skipping or rushing handwashing steps is one of the most common reasons candidates fail the skills test. Frequently tested skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder and elbow • Making an occupied bed Review the DC Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook available on the Credentia website for the complete skills list and required steps.

How to Prepare for the Washington DC CNA Exam

DC's 120-hour training requirement means candidates are generally well-prepared — but the exam still requires focused study. First-attempt pass rates are approximately 70–75%. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying anything. Your topic scores tell you where to spend your time. 2. Focus on Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Master bathing steps, gait belt transfers, catheter care, and proper positioning techniques. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety together — they make up 28% of the exam. Know the PPE donning and doffing order, and memorize the RACE protocol. 4. Practice under timed conditions. Run a 2-hour countdown on a full practice test before exam day. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests before scheduling your real exam date. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 500+ questions across all six content areas — no account required.

After You Pass — Washington DC Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the DC exam, your name is added to the DC Nurse Aide Registry maintained by DC Health. DC employers are required to verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide. Your DC CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. If your certification lapses due to non-employment, you will need to retake the competency exam to be reinstated — and after 3 failed attempts within that 24-month window, you'll need to complete a new training program before trying again. You can verify DC nurse aide registry status through the DC Health website or by contacting the DC Health Nurse Aide Registry directly.
