How to Become a Pharmacy Technician (2026 Guide)
A national credential from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) — two eligibility paths, one exam, and (in most states) a separate state registration step most other certifications don't require.
The CPhT certification path
- 1Have a high school diploma or GED
- 2Complete a PTCB-recognized education/training program, OR log 500 hours of qualifying pharmacy technician work experience in the last 4 years
- 3Pass the 90-question PTCE at a Pearson VUE test center (1400/1600 scaled score to pass)
- 4Check your state board of pharmacy for any additional state registration or licensing requirement
- 5Recertify every 2 years via 20 hours of continuing education
Unlike some certifications, most states require pharmacy technicians to also register or hold a license with the state board of pharmacy — PTCB certification alone may not be enough to legally work in your state.

PTCB gives you two ways to qualify for the PTCE. The education/training pathway: complete a PTCB-recognized pharmacy technician education or training program (many community colleges and vocational schools offer these). The work experience pathway: log at least 500 hours of qualifying pharmacy technician work experience within the preceding four years — no formal program required. Either way, you need a high school diploma or GED, and you must fully disclose any criminal convictions or state board of pharmacy actions on your application.
The 500-hour work-experience pathway is what makes the PTCE more accessible than certifications that require an accredited program with no alternative — if you've been working under supervision in a pharmacy, you may already be eligible.

What exam day looks like
90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored, 10 unscored pretest questions you won't be able to identify) over a 110-minute time limit, delivered at a Pearson VUE test center. You'll see an unofficial pass/fail result on-screen before you leave; your official score report — broken down by content domain — follows shortly after. A scaled score of 1400 (on a 1000–1600 scale) is required to pass.
The step CMA/CNA credentials don't have: state registration
PTCB certification is national, but most states also require pharmacy technicians to register or hold a separate license with their state board of pharmacy before they can legally work — and the rules vary widely. Some states require registration before you can even start on-the-job training; others only require it once you're certified. A few states have no separate registration requirement at all. Check your specific state board of pharmacy's website for the exact process, fees, and timeline — don't assume passing the PTCE alone makes you job-ready everywhere.
Recertification
Your CPhT certification is valid for 2 years. To renew, complete 20 hours of continuing education, including at least 1 hour of pharmacy-related patient safety CE, and pay the recertification fee. PTCB certification lapses faster than many healthcare credentials, so most CPhTs start tracking CE hours early in each cycle rather than scrambling near the deadline.
