Can You Become a Pharmacy Technician Fully Online?
Short answer: yes, for the part that matters most. Unlike some healthcare certifications, PTCB does not require a clinical externship to qualify for the PTCE. Here's how fully online, PTCB-recognized programs actually work, and what to check before you enroll.
Why 100% online PTCB training is possible
PTCB's education/training eligibility pathway requires completion of a PTCB-recognizedprogram — but PTCB itself does not mandate a supervised clinical externship or in-person hours as part of that recognition. Multiple PTCB-recognized programs are delivered entirely online, self-paced, with no clinical placement component. (This is different from CNA training, where federal law requires in-person clinical hours — there's no equivalent federal mandate for pharmacy technician training.)
Two ways to qualify — neither requires an externship
Education/Training Pathway
- ✓Complete a PTCB-recognized education/training program
- ✓Can be fully online, self-paced
- ✓No PTCB-mandated clinical hours or externship
- ✓Required for anyone testing after Jan 1, 2020 who uses this pathway
Work Experience Pathway
- ✓At least 500 hours of verified pharmacy technician work experience
- ✓No formal training program required at all
- ✓Experience documented by your employer
- ✓Often the faster route if you're already working in a pharmacy
How fully online PTCB-recognized programs work
- 1Self-paced online courseworkYou complete lecture content, readings, and quizzes through a learning management system — pharmacy calculations, drug classifications, federal law, pharmacy operations. Most programs give you weeks to months of access and let you move at your own pace.
- 2No clinical placement requiredBecause PTCB doesn't mandate an externship, there's no scheduling, no finding a host pharmacy, and no supervised shift requirement to graduate from the program itself. Some programs offer an optional externship or practicum for students who want hands-on experience before working — but it's not required for PTCE eligibility.
- 3Program completion certificateOnce you finish the coursework and pass the program's own assessments, you receive a completion certificate confirming you finished a PTCB-recognized program — this is what makes you eligible to apply to sit for the PTCE.
- 4PTCE application and examYou apply directly to PTCB, pay the exam fee, and schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. The exam itself is always in person — there's no remote-proctored version of the PTCE.
How to confirm a program is legitimate
PTCB maintains the authoritative list of recognized programs — a program being online is not itself a red flag, but it must appear on that list to make you eligible for the education/training pathway.
- →PTCB's own recognized-program list: The only authoritative source — check directly at ptcb.org before enrolling anywhere.
- →Community colleges: Many offer online or hybrid pharmacy technician certificate programs that are PTCB-recognized.
- →Dedicated online CPhT prep platforms: Several standalone online programs are PTCB-recognized — verify current status directly, since recognition can change.
Red flags: programs to avoid
- ✗Not listed on PTCB's own recognized-program list — check this directly, don't take the school's word for it
- ✗Guarantees you'll pass the PTCE or promises a specific score
- ✗Charges for the CPhT certification itself (certification and the exam are PTCB's, not the school's, to sell)
- ✗No clear instructor contact information or program accreditation details
- ✗Pressures you to enroll immediately with "limited time" pricing
