On-the-Job Scripts: Filling and Labeling a Prescription

The PTCE has no oral or hands-on component — there's no examiner evaluating what you say. These are realistic phrases pharmacy technicians actually use on the job for this task, so you walk into the role sounding like someone who's done it before.

Confirming patient identity before handing over a prescription

"Can you confirm your name and date of birth for me?"

A patient asks a clinical question about side effects or interactions

"That's a great question for our pharmacist — let me grab them for you."

Explaining a wait time for a new prescription

"This one will take about 15-20 minutes — we'll text or call you when it's ready."

The general rule

Confirm identity before releasing anything, route clinical questions to the pharmacist rather than answering them yourself, and give patients honest, specific updates rather than vague reassurance. These habits apply across almost every technician-patient interaction, not just this task.
