The New York CNA Exam — What to Expect

New York requires 100 hours of state-approved training before you can sit for the certification exam — 25 hours above the federal minimum. The hours split into at least 30 hours of classroom theory and 70 hours of supervised clinical practice in a licensed nursing facility. Programs run through community colleges, BOCES, CUNY/SUNY healthcare programs, and many NY nursing facilities that train candidates in exchange for an employment commitment.

The exam is administered by Prometric on behalf of the New York State Department of Health. The written portion covers the six NNAAP content domains, and the clinical skills portion requires demonstrating five randomly assigned hands-on skills in front of a Prometric evaluator. New York is one of the more rigorous states for skills evaluation — observers report stricter timing and procedural compliance than in many Sun Belt states.

You have up to 3 attempts at each portion. If you fail any portion three times, New York requires you to complete a new approved training program before retesting. New York CNA Jobs — Where to Start

The largest CNA employers in New York include NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Langone Health, Northwell Health, Montefiore, NYC Health + Hospitals (the city's public hospital system), Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Catholic Health Long Island. Northwell alone operates more than 20 hospitals and is one of the single largest CNA employers in the country. These academic and integrated systems generally offer the strongest LPN/RN pipeline benefits in the state, but most prefer 6–12 months of facility experience before hiring CNAs into acute care.

Long-term care chains and nonprofit nursing homes are the most common entry point for new New York CNAs. Centers Health Care, ArchCare (the Archdiocese of New York's health system), Parker Jewish Institute, the Jewish Home Lifecare network, and dozens of independent SNFs hire new graduates aggressively across NYC, Long Island, and Upstate.
