CNA Demand in Ohio
Ohio employs roughly 75,000 certified nursing assistants, making it one of the five largest CNA workforces in the country. The state's three-C corridor — Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati — anchors most of the hospital-based demand, while Toledo, Dayton, Akron, Youngstown, and Appalachian southeast Ohio drive long-term-care and home-health hiring. Ohio has more than 900 licensed nursing facilities and one of the largest assisted living markets in the Midwest, both of which run consistent CNA shortages.
The structural drivers are demographic and industrial. Ohio's 65+ population is growing faster than its under-65 population in nearly every county, and many former manufacturing communities — Mahoning Valley, the Miami Valley, and rural Appalachia — have aging populations with significant chronic-disease burden but limited healthcare workforce. CNAs willing to work in those communities frequently see faster hiring and stronger retention bonuses than candidates focused on the three-C metros.
The average CNA wage in Ohio is approximately $16.20/hour. Ohio taxes earned income on a graduated scale, but cost of living statewide runs well below the national median — median home prices in Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton, and Youngstown remain among the most affordable of any large US metro. The Ohio CNA Exam — What to Expect
Ohio requires 75 hours of state-approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) instruction — the federal minimum. The hours split into at least 59 hours of classroom and lab instruction and 16 hours of supervised clinical practice in a long-term care setting. Programs run through community colleges, career-technical centers, and many Ohio nursing facilities that train candidates in exchange for an employment commitment.
The exam is administered by HDmaster (D&S Diversified Technologies) under contract with the Ohio Department of Health — Ohio is not a Prometric state. The written portion covers the standard nurse aide content domains, and the skills portion requires demonstrating randomly selected hands-on skills in front of an HDmaster-approved evaluator. Once you pass, your name is added to the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry maintained by ODH.
You have up to 3 attempts within 24 months of completing your training program. If you fail all three or let the 24-month window lapse, Ohio requires you to complete a new approved NATCEP before retesting. Ohio CNA Jobs — Where to Start
The largest CNA employers in Ohio include the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Cleveland, MetroHealth, Summa Health, Mercy Health (Bon Secours Mercy), OhioHealth, the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, ProMedica, TriHealth, and Christ Hospital Health Network. Cleveland Clinic and Ohio State Wexner set the wage ceiling and offer some of the strongest LPN/RN pipeline benefits in the state, but most academic systems prefer 6–12 months of SNF or assisted living experience before hiring CNAs into acute care.
Long-term care operators are the most common entry point for new Ohio CNAs. Ohio Living, ProMedica Senior Care, Communicare Health Services, Legacy Health Services, and dozens of independent SNFs hire new graduates directly across every region of the state. ProMedica's combined hospital and senior care footprint in northwest Ohio makes it one of the single largest CNA employers in the country.
Home health is a major and growing market in Ohio, particularly across Appalachian southeast Ohio and the rural counties surrounding the three-C corridor. Interim HealthCare (Ohio-founded), Bayada, Addus HomeCare, and LHC Group recruit CNAs statewide. Home health roles in Ohio typically require a personal vehicle but offer scheduling flexibility and per-visit pay structures that often beat facility hourly rates.
