CCMA Task Guides
The CCMA exam is a 100% written, computer-based test — there's no separate hands-on skills evaluation administered by NHA. But the knowledge it tests comes directly from real clinical and administrative medical assistant tasks. These 10 guides walk through exactly what each task looks like in practice, and which CCMA exam domain it draws from.
Why this section exists:studying isolated facts is harder to retain than seeing how they fit together in an actual task. Each guide below covers the real steps, the quality checkpoints that catch errors, the mistakes that cause problems on the job, and realistic patient/workplace phrases — not exam-day scripts, since there's no oral or hands-on component to the CCMA exam itself.
Measuring and Recording Vital Signs
Taking an accurate blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation, and documenting them correctly — the task performed on nearly every patient visit, drawn from the Clinical Procedures domain.
Performing Venipuncture or Capillary Puncture
Drawing blood by vein or fingerstick for lab testing — a Lab Procedures task that overlaps with core phlebotomy technique.
Performing a 12-Lead EKG
Placing electrodes correctly and capturing a clean electrocardiogram tracing — a Clinical Procedures task that requires precise anatomical placement.
Preparing and Administering an Injection
Drawing up and giving an intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intradermal injection correctly — a core Clinical Procedures task with real patient-safety stakes.
Assisting With a Minor Clinical Procedure
Setting up and supporting the provider during an in-office procedure (e.g., suture removal, a minor biopsy, or a wound debridement) — a Clinical Procedures task focused on sterile setup and patient positioning.
Specimen Collection and Lab Processing
Collecting non-blood specimens (urine, throat swabs, wound cultures) and processing them correctly for in-house testing or outside lab transport — a Lab Procedures task.
Patient Intake and Documentation
Gathering an accurate history, chief complaint, and medication list, and documenting it correctly in the EHR before the provider sees the patient — a Patient Care task with direct impact on the visit's quality.
Scheduling and Administrative Workflow
Managing the appointment schedule, referrals, and front-desk workflow accurately — an Administrative Duties task that keeps the clinical day running without errors.
Infection Control and PPE
Applying standard precautions, selecting the correct personal protective equipment, and following proper asepsis technique — a Safety & Infection Control task relevant to nearly every patient interaction.
Responding to a Clinical Emergency
Recognizing and responding appropriately to an in-office medical emergency (syncope, anaphylaxis, chest pain, a seizure) — a Patient Care task that depends on rehearsed, not improvised, response.
