On-the-Job Scripts: Infection Control and PPE

The CCMA exam has no oral or hands-on component — there's no examiner evaluating what you say. These are realistic phrases medical assistants actually use on the job for this task, so you walk into the role sounding like someone who's done it before.

Explaining isolation precautions to a patient's visitor

"We need you to wear this gown and these gloves before going in, just as a precaution — the nurse can show you how to put them on."

Reporting a needlestick to a supervisor

"I need to report a needlestick exposure right away — can you walk me through our exposure protocol?"

The general rule

Confirm identity before any procedure, route clinical questions beyond your scope to the provider rather than answering them yourself, and give patients honest, specific updates rather than vague reassurance. These habits apply across almost every medical-assistant/patient interaction, not just this task.
