On-the-Job Scripts: Specimen Collection and Lab Processing

The CCMA exam has no oral or hands-on component — there's no examiner evaluating what you say. These are realistic phrases medical assistants actually use on the job for this task, so you walk into the role sounding like someone who's done it before.

Giving clean-catch urine instructions

"Clean the area first with the wipe provided, then start urinating into the toilet, and catch the middle portion of the stream in the cup — not the very first or last part."

Explaining a point-of-care test result

"I'm going to run a quick test on this and we'll have a result in about 10 minutes — the doctor will go over what it means."

The general rule

Confirm identity before any procedure, route clinical questions beyond your scope to the provider rather than answering them yourself, and give patients honest, specific updates rather than vague reassurance. These habits apply across almost every medical-assistant/patient interaction, not just this task.
