Can You Get a CMA Certification Online?

The short answer: not entirely. You can complete classroom coursework online through a hybrid program, but AAMA's accreditation requirements mean the clinical practicum must be done in person. Here's what that means in practice and how to find a legitimate hybrid program.

Why 100% online CMA certification is not possible

AAMA requires CMA candidates to graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Medical Assistant program — there is no work-experience alternative pathway the way some other certifications offer. Both accrediting bodies require a supervised clinical practicum of at least 160 hoursin an ambulatory healthcare setting (a physician's office or outpatient clinic). Unlike CNA's requirement, this isn't a federal law — it's an accreditation standard built into every CAAHEP/ABHES program — but it is just as non-negotiable: virtual simulation does not satisfy it, and a program without this practicum isn't accredited and won't qualify you for the AAMA exam.

What can — and can't — be done online

Can be online

  • ✓Anatomy and physiology lectures
  • ✓All 8 AAMA exam topic area coursework
  • ✓Medical terminology and documentation
  • ✓Video demonstrations of clinical procedures
  • ✓Quizzes and written assessments
  • ✓Legal/ethical and HIPAA content
  • ✓Billing, coding, and insurance coursework

Must be in person

  • ✗The 160+ hour clinical practicum (externship)
  • ✗Hands-on procedure practice (vitals, EKG, injections, specimen collection)
  • ✗Supervised patient interaction
  • ✗Preceptor sign-off on clinical competencies
  • ✗The CMA exam itself (written, at PSI or via remote proctoring)

How hybrid CMA programs work

A hybrid program splits your training into two components that you complete on different schedules:

  1. 1
    Online classroom component
You complete lecture content, readings, and quizzes through a learning management system (LMS) on your own schedule. This covers all 8 AAMA exam topic areas plus anatomy, medical terminology, and documentation skills.
  2. 2
    In-person clinical practicum
You complete at least 160 hours at a physician's office, outpatient clinic, or similar ambulatory setting approved or arranged by your program. A preceptor supervises you performing real clinical and administrative tasks. This cannot be done virtually — your program coordinates or approves the placement.
  3. 3
    Competency sign-off
Before you graduate, your preceptor and program sign off on your clinical and administrative competencies. This is an internal accreditation requirement, distinct from the AAMA exam itself.
  4. 4
    Certification exam
Once you graduate from the accredited program, you're eligible to sit for the CMA exam at a PSI test center or via remote proctoring. This is the only part of the official exam process that's computer-based — no separate in-person skills test exists beyond what your program already required for graduation.

Where to find legitimate hybrid programs

Accredited programs — including hybrid ones — must be verifiable through CAAHEP or ABHES directly. A program must hold current accreditation from one of these two bodies to make you eligible for the AAMA exam. Common sources:

  • →CAAHEP program search: caahep.org lists every currently accredited Medical Assistant program, including hybrid options.
  • →ABHES program search: abhes.org provides the equivalent directory for ABHES-accredited programs.
  • →Community colleges: Many community college MA programs are CAAHEP-accredited and offer hybrid scheduling.
  • →Vocational and career schools: May offer accelerated hybrid formats. Verify current CAAHEP/ABHES accreditation before enrolling — not all career schools are accredited.

Red flags: programs to avoid

  • ✗Promises 100% online CMA eligibility with no practicum requirement
  • ✗Not listed as currently accredited on caahep.org or abhes.org
  • ✗No physical practicum site or preceptor arrangement described
  • ✗Claims you can complete the program in a few weeks (accredited programs typically run many months)
  • ✗Charges extra fees specifically for "AAMA exam eligibility" beyond normal tuition

Frequently asked questions

Can you become a CMA completely online?
No. AAMA requires graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program, and both require an in-person clinical practicum of at least 160 hours. The classroom portion can be online, but the practicum must be in person.
Are online CMA programs legitimate?
Hybrid programs — online classroom, in-person practicum — are legitimate as long as the program holds current CAAHEP or ABHES accreditation. Programs claiming full online eligibility with no practicum are not accredited.
How many practicum hours are required?
CAAHEP-accredited programs require at least 160 hours of unpaid supervised clinical practicum. ABHES programs require a comparable practicum within at least 24 weeks of full-time study.
What does a hybrid CMA program look like?
Online lectures and coursework on your own schedule, combined with a 160+ hour in-person practicum at an approved ambulatory site. Your program coordinates or approves the placement.
