Assisting With a Minor Clinical Procedure — Practice Checklist

Walk through all 7 steps in order. Use this to build the habit until the sequence is automatic.

Step-by-Step Procedure (7 steps)

  1. 1.

Review the procedure order and gather the specific instrument tray and supplies the provider will need, checking sterile package integrity and expiration dates.

  2. 2.

Position the patient appropriately for the specific procedure and drape for both privacy and to maintain a sterile field.

  3. 3.

Open sterile packages using proper technique, presenting the sterile field to the provider without contaminating it.

  4. 4.

Hand instruments to the provider as requested, maintaining sterile technique throughout and anticipating next-needed items where experience allows.

  5. 5.

Monitor the patient for comfort and any signs of distress throughout the procedure, and reassure them as appropriate without distracting the provider.

  6. 6.

After the procedure, assist with dressing the site, provide the patient with written aftercare instructions, and process used instruments per the practice's sterilization protocol.

  7. 7.

Document the procedure performed, materials used, and any specimens sent to pathology, per the practice's charting requirements.

Quality Checkpoints (4)

Confirm each of these before considering the task complete.

  • Sterile package integrity and expiration dates are checked before opening, not assumed.

  • The sterile field is never contaminated by a non-sterile hand, sleeve, or item crossing into it.

  • The patient receives clear aftercare instructions before leaving, not just a verbal "you're all set."

  • Any specimen collected is labeled and routed correctly, with chain-of-custody documentation where required.

Avoid These Mistakes

  • ⚠

Opening a sterile package incorrectly, exposing the inner contents to a non-sterile surface.

  • ⚠

Reaching across or over a sterile field, which contaminates it even without direct contact.

  • ⚠

Rushing aftercare instructions because the schedule is behind, leaving the patient unclear on wound care at home.

  • ⚠

Mislabeling or losing track of a specimen meant for pathology.
