On-the-Job Scripts: Assisting With a Minor Clinical Procedure

The CCMA exam has no oral or hands-on component — there's no examiner evaluating what you say. These are realistic phrases medical assistants actually use on the job for this task, so you walk into the role sounding like someone who's done it before.

Reassuring a patient mid-procedure

"You're doing great — just a little more pressure and we'll be done in a minute."

Giving aftercare instructions

"Keep this dressing dry for 24 hours, change it once a day, and call us if you see increasing redness, swelling, or drainage."

The general rule

Confirm identity before any procedure, route clinical questions beyond your scope to the provider rather than answering them yourself, and give patients honest, specific updates rather than vague reassurance. These habits apply across almost every medical-assistant/patient interaction, not just this task.
