Why Candidates Fail the Denture Care Skill
Dentures must be handled over a basin filled with water or lined with a towel — dropping them on a hard surface can fracture them, and the evaluator will count it as a technique failure. Candidates must use cool or lukewarm water (never hot, which warps the denture) and non-abrasive cleanser (not regular toothpaste). The basin must be cleaned after use, and gloves must be worn throughout the entire procedure.
How this skill is evaluated
The evaluator scores each skill on a pass/fail checklist. You do not get partial credit. A single critical error — or several minor ones — will fail you on this skill entirely. You must pass all 5 randomly selected skills to pass the clinical exam.
The 5 Most Common Failure Points
Using hot water — this warps dentures and is a critical error.
Not padding the sink to protect dentures from breakage if dropped.
Skipping brushing of inner surfaces and clasps.
Not rinsing the resident's mouth before reinserting the dentures.
Storing dentures dry rather than in water or solution.
